5th Grade Overview

August 17 - 23

Friday, October 4 Field Trip: Chickamauga Battlefield; 9 A.M. - 3:15 P.M.

Bible: Coming home this week is a list of quiz dates for catechism questions and memory verses up until Fall Break. I will keep you posted when days get closer. It may look like a lot, and it is, but due to the speed at which we will be working through these catechism questions, there will be prep time in class before quizzes when needed. The first quiz date is August 26 over Romans 14:7-8 (CSB).

F&F: Students will begin the first unit, Sequence of Events. They will begin having homework assignments in their reading book this week. This reading may take place on their own or with you and your child alternating reading aloud. I really don’t mind. The point is to have it read before class the next day. Students are required to make at least FIVE notes per night on the main character and important events in their lives (what brings the main character joy, fear, worry, sadness, etc.). Students may use the process questions in the F&F section of their binders to guide them on note taking.

English: In Writing, we will begin our workshop protocols and introduce Narrative writing. In ELA, we will study sentence structure and the basics of sentence types. Don’t forget, 5 pictures are due for ELA by Wednesday, August 21.

Math: We will be diving into the 3rd dimension in Math. Unit 1 covers volume, writing and solving expressions, and long division review. Their homework packet goes home Monday and is due Friday. 

Science/Social Studies: On Monday, we will be looking at various items under the microscope - everything from bugs to dollar bills!! Students are encouraged to bring anything they think would be interesting to see under a microscope on Monday. We will also begin our unit on the Civil War next week as we talk about the steps and causes of the war.

Spelling: Spelling List 1 and the corresponding Activity Sheet will be in binders by Tuesday. The activity sheet should be completed and turned in by Wednesday, August 28. Students should follow the directions at the top of the sheet. Test 1 will be on Friday, August 30.
